The Benin–Sapele, Sapele/Warri Expressway has collapsed, and with it, the patience of thousands of Delta residents.
For weeks, the Amukpe Roundabout has been the scene of a man-made disaster. Failed portions of the road have turned the strategic Benin–Sapele–Amukpe Roundabout–Effurun corridor into a death trap and a parking lot, where trailers, buses and private vehicles spend days in gridlock.
The cost is heavy. Goods are spoiling. Businesses are bleeding. Families are stranded. And the Delta economy is suffering.
Friday, August 28, 2026, was another terrible gridlock, even though the Niger Delta Development Commission, NDDC, took a step by flagging off the reconstruction of 15.4km of the failed section, where two contractors are to work from both ends.
It is a welcome development. But it is not enough.
Road users and stakeholders are now looking up to the Delta State Government under Governor Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori to intervene.
The Benin–Sapele, Sapele/Warri road is not just a federal road. It is Delta’s economic lifeline. It connects our markets, our ports, and our people to the rest of the country. Leaving it in this state is leaving Deltans to suffer.
The people’s demand is simple: Governor Oborevwori, intervene now. Deploy State resources. Provide palliatives to stranded motorists. Partner with NDDC and federal agencies to ensure this project is delivered in record time.
The “MORE Agenda” promises Meaningful Development, Opportunities for All, Real Reforms and Enhanced Peace. The people of Sapele and commuters across Delta are asking: where is the “MORE” on this road?
The gridlock must end. The suffering must stop.
