The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has assured Nigerians that voters will determine the winners of the 2027 general elections, stressing its commitment to an electoral process that reflects the wishes of the electorate.
INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, gave the assurance while addressing the 10th annual conference of the Guild of Corporate Online Publishers (GOCOP), held in Lagos. He was represented at the event by the Lagos State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Prof. Ayobami Salami. (Business and Transport)
Speaking on the conference theme, “2027 Elections: Trust, Transparency and Shared Responsibilities,” the INEC chairman said the commission had no preferred candidate or political party and would focus on ensuring that the electoral process was credible.
He noted that the credibility of the elections would depend not only on the deployment of personnel and equipment but also on transparency, reliable results and the collective responsibility of stakeholders to protect the integrity of the ballot.
Amupitan also outlined measures being implemented by the commission to strengthen preparations for the 2027 elections, including improvements to its technological systems, logistics and grassroots operations.
He said INEC had been expanding its operational presence across more than 176,000 polling units nationwide as part of efforts to improve election management.
The commission also highlighted its voter registration activities and the processing of Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs), urging eligible Nigerians to collect their cards and prepare to participate in the elections.
Amupitan called on online publishers and other media organisations to support voter education by providing accurate information, encouraging participation and helping Nigerians understand the electoral process.
He stressed that public confidence in the elections would require cooperation among INEC, political parties, the media, security agencies, civil society organisations and voters.
The commission maintained that preparations for the 2027 general elections were aimed at strengthening electoral credibility and ensuring that the outcome reflects the choices made by Nigerians at the ballot box.
